Ba Zi, Explained: What the Four Pillars Actually Describe
Turn a birth moment into eight characters, then read a structured description of timing and tendency.
1. What Ba Zi is: writing a moment as eight characters
Ba Zi represents the year, month, day and hour of birth, each written as one pair of characters — four pairs, eight characters, hence "Four Pillars." The ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches combine into sixty pairings. It is not eight isolated symbols but a notation system for the structure of a moment; what matters is how the four pairs relate to one another, not whether a single character is auspicious.
2. What each pillar governs
Traditionally the year pillar relates to early life and family background, the month pillar to formative environment and career structure, the day pillar to the person and their partner, and the hour pillar to later life and children. The stem of the day pillar — the Day Master — is the reference point for the whole chart; the other seven characters are read relative to it. This is why the same eight characters read completely differently against a different Day Master.
3. Five Elements and Ten Gods: a vocabulary for relationships
The Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) describe qualities and how they interact — generating cycles and controlling cycles. The Ten Gods translate those relationships into human terms: Companion, Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer, Indirect Resource, Direct Resource. Each name actually describes "how this character relates to the Day Master," not a fixed destiny label. Read that way, you stop reading Direct Officer as "will hold office."
4. True solar time: why longitude moves the hour pillar
The hour pillar is set by the actual solar position at the birth place, not by the clock on a phone. Two corrections apply. First, the timezone central meridian: China uses UTC+8 (120°E) nationwide, but Ürümqi sits near 87.6°E — roughly 129 minutes apart. Second, the equation of time: Earth's orbit is elliptical, so true solar time and mean solar time differ by up to about ±16 minutes across the year. Together these can shift the hour pillar by more than two hours, and crossing a two-hour boundary changes the pillar entirely. The more precisely you enter the birth place, the more reliable the hour pillar.
5. What Ba Zi can and cannot answer
It can describe tendencies and timing: which environments suit you, when to push and when to hold, which directions align. It cannot give specific events or guaranteed outcomes, and it should not replace medical, legal or investment advice. Treated as a structured language of tendency rather than a timetable of fixed outcomes, that is how the system was meant to be used.
Frequently asked
How is Ba Zi different from Western astrology?
Astrology's sun sign uses only the sun's position in the zodiac (birth month). Ba Zi uses year, month, day and hour, with the day and hour pillars highly sensitive to the exact moment. Astrology's granularity is a month; Ba Zi's is a two-hour period — two people born the same day at different hours can have entirely different charts.
Can I get a chart without knowing my birth time?
You can produce year, month and day pillars, but the hour pillar will be missing. The hour pillar carries weight for later life, children and overall balance, so conclusions will be more conservative. If the time truly cannot be confirmed, use the three known pillars for broad tendencies and mark the hour as unknown.
Can Ba Zi predict specific events?
It is not designed for that. Ba Zi's strength is describing tendency and timing, not naming events. Any claim of predicting exactly what will happen on a given day goes beyond what the system can support.
