Annual Flying Stars 2026: A Direction-by-Direction Handbook
Nine stars, nine directions — where each one sits this year, and what to watch.
1. How the annual star is derived
The centre star for a year is computed from its digits: sum them and reduce to a single digit, subtract that from 11, and subtract 9 if the result exceeds 9. For 2026: 2+0+2+6=10, 1+0=1, 11−1=10, 10−9=1 — so the One White star takes the centre. With the centre fixed, the remaining eight stars are placed in the eight directions following the Lo Shu flight path.
2. Why "activation" matters
The same star in the same direction affects one household strongly and another barely at all, and the usual reason is whether that direction is activated. Doors that open and close, corridors, running appliances, moving water — these are activations. An activated direction amplifies whatever star sits there: favourable stars more so, and adverse stars more so. Read the star first, then ask whether the position is active.
3. How to use an annual reading
The practical use is not to rebuild your home into an auspicious one. It is three smaller things. First, identify the direction that most needs care this year and avoid major changes or long dwell times there. Second, move important activity toward favourable directions — relocating a desk, for instance. Third, keep adverse directions tidy and quiet: no clutter, no large appliances.
4. Read it together with the life trigram
The annual star is public — the same direction carries the same star for everyone. The life trigram is personal — the same direction means different things to different people. They only become useful together: the annual star tells you where something is shifting this year, and the life trigram tells you whether that shift is good for you. Using either alone usually misleads.
Frequently asked
When does the annual star change?
Traditionally at the start of spring (Li Chun), not on 1 January. The 2026 layout therefore takes effect from Li Chun 2026, and our charts use that boundary.
What changes in 2026?
The distribution across the eight directions is computed by the rule engine from the year using the Lo Shu flight path — every step can be checked by hand rather than being a fixed statement from a table.
Do I need to buy objects to place around the home?
No. Traditionally, most directional adjustment is achieved through use and tidiness — what a space is used for, and whether it is cluttered. Objects are secondary, well behind function and order.
